Neolithic Era c 9000-2400BC
The Neolithic era started in Europe around 9000 BC in the Middle East were followed by those in Egypt, India, and China. In Europe, the Neolithic era started in around 7,000 BC in south-east Europe and took over three millennia to reach the entire continent.
It comprised of a move away from a hunter-gather, semi-nomadic lifestyle to the establishment of permanent settlements, new technologies (such as pottery), the use of flint and stone tools and new religious beliefs. Neolithic people were more sophisticated than is generally realized, and this is shown by the megalithic (huge stone) monuments they erected, such as Stonehenge in England, Carnac in France, and Ggantija in Gozo.
They also left long barrows (Kennet) and chambered burial mounds. Excavated neolithic settlements have been found in Italy, France, Spain, Greece and Turkey (Catal Höyük). They are easily identified as being neolithic by the remains of rectangular longhouses that were widely dispersed across Europe and there is evidence that the people enjoyed a varied diet of fish, fowl, game and cattle.
