Greek Theatre Tragedy Mask
The origins of the mask in tragedy theatre lies in its religious origins. Ancient Greek actors held a fear of losing their soul if they were seen acting out terrible deeds, along with the confusion between character and actor, and the representation of heroic "types" rather than individuals.
Each mask had its own shape and colour to denote the character or emotion being depicted, and gave actors a superhuman, depersonalised, but very human appearance, suited to the heroic qualities of tales from bygone ages.
