It was the only tomb in the King's Valley that had not been previously looted. It is believed that the Valley of the Kings had been chosen as a burial ground for the kings of Egypt, because from a distance the mountains of the West Bank ressemble the hieroglyph Akhet (horizon). Since the sun sets in the west, the ancient Egyptians associated it with the entry of the deceased into the underworld.
Tutankhamen's tomb was excavated and first opened by Howard Carter in 1921, and the original is housed in the National Archaeology Museum in Cairo, Egypt.
