Calyx from Chios Calyx from Chios
Hand painted replica Kalyx style urn from the island of Chios, from about 600 B.C. The deer depictions are representative of much of early Greek art, which featured natural scenes containing flora, fauna and marine animals.
Chios claims to be the birthplace of Homer, Hippocrates - the mathematician and friend of doctors, and Oenopides, a legendary king who was said to have brought wine-making to the island. The name, Oenopides, means "wine-faced" and he was reputed to be the son of Dionysus and Ariadne. Dionysus was the Greek god of wine and Ariadne was the fertility goddess of Crete, who was met by Theseus prior to him slaying the Minotaur in the Labyrinth.

Greek Theatre Tragedy Mask Greek Theatre Tragedy Mask
The origins of the mask in tragedy theatre lies in its religious origins. Ancient Greek actors held a fear of losing their soul if they were seen acting out terrible deeds, along with the confusion between character and actor, and the representation of heroic "types" rather than individuals. Each mask had its own shape and colour to denote the character or emotion being depicted, and gave actors a superhuman, depersonalised, but very human appearance, suited to the heroic qualities of tales from by-gone ages.
